Being "American" is generally only associated with the USA because its pretty much the only way to say what you are when your from the USA. You cant say "I'm a United States of American" Pretty much the only thing you can says is that "I am a citizen of The United States of America"

I'm Canadian, and this goes with every single one I have ever met, we call people from the USA Americans, and people from other countries in the Americas are titled to their respective countries.

If a person wishes to be technical, people from Europe are Europeans and Asians from Asia, etc, Than Canadians and People from the States are North Americans

This is a huge discussion that can go on forever about society and citizenship and yadda yadda yadda, but I dont wanna get into, just tossing in my few cents.

Perhaps the USA should have figured out a different name back in the day? :P

I have MANY friends that are Mexicans, whose parents are straight outta Mexico, but when I think "America", I think the US of A. If America meant all of North America, then America would also mean South America. America would also mean Canada. I don't know if Canadians call their country "America", but something about that doesn't click.

I have no problem with Mexicans or any other nationality that comes over to the US to claim it as their own. I greet with an open mind, because I am aware how other countries suppress their people and live in immense poverty; however, the problem I have, which I have learned at the forefront of it, because of where I live I am the only Native American in my apartment complex.
Throughout the past two years, these people have degraded me from three different nationalities, Nigerian, Korean, and Indonesian people. Most are rude people, thinking we owe them something, and look at you as if you do not belong here. I, truthfully, do not like too many of them from my experience thus so far, but I am not going to blame them (not their fault they are here) or hold resentment, because it not healthy. Besides, it does not matter where you are from-USA or anywhere else, there will always be that urge to say ‘reject send to maker,’ because of selfishness, greed, hate, weakness, or the value of life. No lie, look at the world we live in, it is almost fearful to go inside.
